Many people are concerned about the safety of a chiropractic adjustment. This may be the number one concern I get from people I meet in public. I often hear people say that they would love to go to the chiropractor if it wasn’t for their safety concerns.
Are Chiropractic Adjustments Safe or Not?
Besides patients, adjustment safety is the interest of another group of individuals, mainly actuaries. Wherever there is a risk, there are individuals hired to study and predict that risk. It’s no surprise that most actuaries work for insurance companies. Their job is to study the data, compute the risk, and protect the insurance carrier from unprofitable loss.
In 2001, an insurance company published Current Concepts in Vertebrobasilar Complications Following Spinal Manipulation. Manipulation is another name that is sometimes used for adjustment. The objective was to assess the safety of chiropractic care. Among the 19 conclusions from this book, the first one sums up the findings in one sentence: patient damage due to a chiropractic manipulation/adjustment is very rare. It is also important to note that because of chiropractic’s proven safety record, malpractice insurance for chiropractors is a mere fraction of the cost that medical doctors pay.
When New Zealand’s government was considering including chiropractic care in its socialized medicine plan, it conducted a rigorous examination of the chiropractic profession. The results were published in a landmark book, which concluded that chiropractic is remarkably safe and effective.
The bottom line is chiropractic is one of the safest forms of healthcare that you can receive. It is a shame that people are led to believe that chiropractic care is not safe and therefore do not experience the benefits that chiropractic has to offer. Don’t let that be your story; let chiropractic help you experience a better life!
