Can a Chiropractor Help My Bulging Disc?

Bulging discs are becoming more and more common in today’s world. I often get asked the question, “Can a chiropractor help me with my bulging disc?” The short answer is YES! However, I would like to explain why that is.

What Are Discs?

Discs act as spacers keeping the spinal bones apart. This allows for the spinal nerve roots to exit in between the spinal bones without any “pinching.” Discs also act as shock absorbers to absorb some of the load that your spine is under day in and day out. For these two reasons, discs are a vital part of the functional spine.

Spinal Misalignment Causes

Due to daily activities like bending and lifting, sitting for long periods of time in front of a computer, and even sleeping in a wrong position, the spinal alignment can be compromised. Add to that slips, falls, sports trauma, fender benders, and repetitive movements, spinal misalignments are becoming epidemic in our culture.

At first, these spinal misalignments, also known as Subluxations, cause no pain or discomfort. However, over time Subluxation damages the spinal joints, spinal nerves, and spinal discs. One such spinal disc damage is classified as a Bulging Disc.

What is a Bulging Disc?

As a result of the misalignments in the spinal column, the spinal biomechanics are altered and the way the spine absorbs load is compromised. This causes the disc to be under continual stress, damaging the disc over time. Much like a sponge has to be “relaxed” to absorb water, so does the disc.

If the biomechanics of the spine have been compromised to not allow for the disc to “relax” then it will not be able to absorb water containing nutrients and therefore damage occurs to the disc. The disc loses its thickness and that is called a bulging disc. Bulging discs can eventually herniate creating even more problems. Understanding this allows you to understand why a chiropractor can help.

Chiropractic Help

Chiropractors locate, analyze, and correct subluxations of the spine. By correcting these subluxations, normal spinal biomechanics are restored. This takes the excessive stress off the spinal bones and spinal nerves, as well as the spinal discs. It is the stress that is taken off the spinal disc that improves the disc’s function and allows it to act like a thicker spacer and better shock absorber. The result; a better life!
